Welcome to the Blog!

Hello! Welcome to the Project Based Learning (PBL) blog. My name is Kathlyn Gehl, I am a member of Middlebury’s class of 2021.5, an Art History major, American Studies minor, and most importantly for this blog, an advisor to the PBL Community of Practice, and a former Community Connected PBL Teaching Assistant (CCPBL TA).

When I first applied to be a CCPBL TA, the concept of PBL was so foreign to me that I had to google in order to write my job application. In January 2021, I started a training course with the CCE in PBL best practices and community engagement techniques. In the spring, and over the summer, I worked as the TA for Professor Ellery Foutch (American Studies) on her course Vermont Community Collaborations: Public Humanities Lab.

Also, over the summer, I attended the Worcester Polytechnic’s Summer Institute for PBL as a student liaison and am continuing that work this fall.

Although I am very familiar with PBL, I have never been in a class that is “officially” PBL. However, my experiences with projects in the curriculum have taught me both the importance of learning through doing as well as the downsides to poorly executed projects.

I am happy to join the Community of Practice this fall and look forward to interacting with everyone in person!
